Today we went to the Atlanta Falcons v. Detroit Lions game at the Georgia Dome. You probably know the outcome. If you don't know - we lost. We were hoping to win, but what are you going to do. However, the day was mighty fun.
The day started early when
mtn_hermit came to our house at 8am. Some other friends - we'll call them Tom and Sam - came to pick us up in Tom's minivan...I mean "luxury cruiser". We drove down to one of the stadium parking lots for some tailgating. Sam is from Australia and he had never been to an American football game. And
mtn_hermit had never been to an NFL game either, so we were going to introduce them to the art of tailgating. Some other friends joined us. John came in from Detroit just to see this game. And another friend, Kimberly, came to see it even though she is neither a Lions nor a Falcons fan.
Sam too charge of the grill and made some fantastic sausages, kielbasa, hotdogs and hamburgers. We had some beer to start with, but then after we ate we participated in a Detroit tailgating tradition - The 40 Grab Bag. In the bag are several 40s of beer, with one of them being something particularly nasty. In our case, it was Old English 800. Kimberly managed to ick the OE out of the bag first!
Eventually we walked over to the stadium.
oneandonlymatt,
mtn_hermit and I had great seats. We were in the same section as the rest of our group, but they were closer to the field.
The game itself was pretty miserable. It was 21 to 0 in the first freaking quarter! The lions scored three total touchdowns but it wasn't enough to win the game.
We left at the final two minute warning and went back to our lot to post-game tailgate. We made the rest of the food and had some more to drink and some of the guys played some football of their own.
It was a fantastic day. We got home around 7pm. The only thing that would have made the day better was a win for the Lions. Oh well, there is always next Sunday.
