I'll remember you, Dr. Schmitt

I don't normally write Memorial Posts. Today, however, I am making an exception. I still receive the History Newsletter from the Western Michigan University History Department. I don't normally read it, but I was flipping through it when I noticed that the last page was dedicated to a professor who had recently passed away. I looked closer and thought "I think he was one of my professors..." So I read the article. He was, in fact, one of my professors. But he was more than that. Dr. Schmitt taught a class called Popular Art and Architecture. [info]oneandonlymatt and I each took that class but at different times. When we started dating we learned that class was one of the things we had in common. Beyond that, both of us had learned to love the works of Frank Lloyd Wright in that class. If it hadn't been for Dr. Schmitt, we may not have had that particular interest in common.

I remember once after Matt and I started dating, I called Dr. Schmitt's office and left a message for him. I told him I wasn't as current student but I had taken his class and remembered that he had told us there was a whole neighborhood of Frank Lloyd Wright houses right in Kalamazoo. Matt and I wanted to go see them. Well, Dr. Schmitt called me back, which I thought was pretty awesome of him, and not only told me about the subdivision in Kalamazoo but he also told me there was another FLW designed neighborhood in a nearby town. He did tell me that one was a closed community. Matt was already living back in Detroit. One weekend he came to visit me and we went to both neighborhoods. We even drove through the closed community and hoped no one would come out and yell at us. That day had long been one of my favorite memories.

There are a couple people I am grateful for when it comes to my relationship. Of course there is [info]apocalypso23, without whom I may have never even had the nerve to even make the relationship happen. Another person I would credit is Dr. Schmitt, History Professor at Western Michigan University, because of the information he gave me about the FLW communities in Kalamazoo. He passed away August 6, 2008. I will remember him.

Happy Valentine's Day!

Hi Everyone. I just wanted to say "Happy Valentine's Day" to everyone. As you probably know by know, today is also the anniversary of the very first date for [info]oneandonlymatt and me. Today marks 12 years together. (Hey, since we're not legally married, we have to celebrate something, right?) Yay us. And I love him just as much if not more today than I did then. I am a very lucky Wheezy to have a wonderful partner like him.

We are going to Medieval Times. If you haven't heard that story already (because I'm gushy and I probably already told it to you all a million times) here it is. Matt said to me last week, "I made our Valentine's day reservations but it's silly and you'll never guess where we're going." And I said, "The only thing I can think of is Medieval Times..." and I was right. I guess after a dozen years two people know each other pretty well.

So I hope everyone has a wonderful Valentine's Day. Say "I love you" to all your sweeties and really mean it. Love is such a good thing.

Run...don't walk...listen to me now....

Before you do another thing in your entire life - immediately friend [info]oneandonlymatt. This is my much talked about life-partner and he has created a journal. He created it last night, so there isn't anything posted yet, but when there is, you won't regret the choice.

Yay!
